My Take
Michael Essien is exactly the midfield engine I find easy to love. At 177 cm he was never the biggest, yet his strength, stamina, and box-to-box range made him feel like three players at once. I respect the climb: from Liberty Professionals in Ghana to Bastia, then a breakout at Lyon before the bigger stages. He is the rare two-way midfielder a teammate trusts completely, doing the unglamorous covering and tackling that wins matches. That he moved into coaching and now works on a Danish staff fits him perfectly. Player or coach, he keeps sweating to hold a team together.
