Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender is one of those rare actors who makes you feel slightly uncomfortable in the best possible way — he's so committed to every role that you almost forget you're watching a performance. Born in Germany, raised in Ireland, he brings this dual European intensity that Hollywood doesn't quite know what to do with, and honestly that tension is part of what makes him magnetic. His work as Brandon in Shame (which earned him the Volpi Cup at Venice in 2011) is genuinely one of the bravest male performances of the 2010s, and his Steve Jobs and Macbeth back-to-back in 2015 proved he could carry any register, any genre. Two Oscar nominations and somehow no win yet — which tells you everything about how unpredictable awards season can be. Guy's a serious talent and I hope he keeps swinging for material this challenging.
