Michael McIntyre

Michael McIntyre fascinates me as a study in mass appeal. Becoming the highest-grossing stand-up in the world in 2012 is no accident: his observational, physical comedy turns the mundane into the universal, which is far harder than it looks. An Edinburgh University alumnus from London, he built an empire on warmth rather than provocation, an increasingly rare formula. Shows like Big Show and The Wheel prove his instinct for what families actually want to watch together. I respect comedians who can fill arenas without a mean streak; McIntyre is the rare one who makes likability itself a craft.
