My Take

Refereeing is a thankless job, so I find it telling that Michael Oliver became one of the names even casual Premier League viewers know. Coming up through Northumberland and earning a FIFA badge in 2012 at a relatively young age says he was marked out early. I appreciate that he tends to let games breathe rather than reaching for cards on instinct, even if that composure occasionally puts him at the center of the storm. Officials only get noticed when something goes wrong, so the fact that I mostly remember his big-match appointments rather than his blunders is probably the highest praise I can give.
