My Take
What I find compelling about Shellenberger is not whether he is right, but that he refuses to let consensus go unexamined. Apocalypse Never and San Fransicko both detonated debates precisely because he pokes at sacred convictions, environmentalism and homelessness, from inside the data rather than outside it. As an editor I value provocateurs who force a field to defend its assumptions. He is divisive, sometimes uncomfortably so, and I do not agree with all of it. But a writer who reliably makes thoughtful people argue is doing genuine intellectual work, and his cultural anthropology training gives that contrarianism unexpected depth and discipline.
