My Take
Michael Stipe is, for me, the patron saint of indie ambiguity. As the voice and lyricist of R.E.M., he turned mumbled, cryptic poetry into something millions could feel even when they couldn't quite parse it, and that mystery was the point. Born in Decatur and shaped by the Athens, Georgia college-rock scene, he built a career on resisting the obvious commercial gesture. I admire how he expanded outward into acting, producing and even running a restaurant, treating fame as a tool rather than a goal. There's a deliberate quietness to him that, paradoxically, makes him one of rock's most magnetic figures.
