My Take
Michaela Coel is, for my money, one of the bravest creators working today. Born in Aldgate to Ghanaian heritage, she writes and performs her own material, and with I May Destroy You she turned her own trauma into television that refuses easy answers. That takes a kind of courage most artists never summon. From the BAFTA comedy win for Chewing Gum to the Jane Fonda Humanitarian Award and a Royal Society of Literature fellowship, the range of recognition mirrors the range of her gifts. Walking away from a huge HBO offer to keep her authorship intact only sharpened my respect. I will watch anything she makes.
