Míchel (footballer, born 1975)

I find Míchel a genuinely compelling figure. A Madrid-born midfielder who reinvented himself as a manager, he now leads Ajax, one of football's most storied clubs, which takes real nerve for a Spaniard abroad. At 174 cm he was never imposing, so his longevity speaks to intelligence and reading of the game rather than physical gifts. I have a soft spot for self-made coaches who climb through grit instead of reputation, and his journey from the pitch to the dugout suggests a competitor who simply refuses to stop testing himself.
