My Take

Mike Myers fascinates me as a writer who happens to be his own perfect instrument. Every character he is famous for began on the page, in his head, before he disappeared into it with prosthetics and accents. Winning MTV's Best Villain award twice says something delightful: audiences loved his bad guys more than most actors' heroes. I respect the Scarborough kid who carried Canadian comedy sensibilities into global blockbusters and was honored back home with the Order of Canada. Comedy ages badly as a rule; the fact that his catchphrases still circulate decades later is the rarest kind of victory, and proof his writing was always the real engine.
