Mike Vallely

Mike Vallely lives the kind of refuse-to-be-categorized life I genuinely admire. Rising as a pro skateboarder out of New Jersey and then spending over a decade fronting a hardcore punk legend like Black Flag is an audacious pairing of careers, both built on raw physical commitment. The detail that he never appeared on an album yet served longer than almost anyone in the band tells me his value was presence and conviction, not paperwork. Skating and screaming on stage are both acts of total exposure, and the people who refuse to stay in one lane fascinate me. He strikes me as pure, uncompromising energy.
