Miki Nakatani

I'll be honest, Miki Nakatani is one of those people who makes "elegance" feel like an actual skill rather than a vibe. What gets me is the arc: she came up out of the idol world, the kind of start that usually boxes you in, and then just quietly outgrew all of it. Her music phase working with Ryuichi Sakamoto has this cool, glassy, almost detached beauty I still think about, and then she turns around and wins serious film hardware like the Mainichi and an Asian Film Award by actually disappearing into roles. The fact that she spends half the year in Salzburg, studying German on top of all of it, feels almost unfair. She reads as deeply private and a little untouchable, but there's a steel underneath that I find genuinely magnetic. A rare one.
