My Take

Nakamura Tomijūrō II fascinates me precisely because so little survives him. Born in 1786, he performed in the mid-Edo era, long before photography or recordings could preserve a single gesture. His art lives only in playbills, names, and whatever was written down, which makes him almost mythic. Carrying the Tomijūrō name, a major hereditary kabuki lineage, would have been a real weight to bear as its second holder. I find something deeply moving in the fact that a name spoken on stage over two centuries ago still reaches us today. That endurance is, to me, the truest measure of an actor's craft.
