My Take
I have such a soft spot for actors who grew up backstage, and Nakamura Shichinosuke II is exactly that kind of guy: born into kabuki royalty, on the boards as a kid, with that lineage practically humming in his bones. What gets me is his onnagata work, those lowered eyes and that quiet, sly elegance that somehow lands harder than anything loud. Then he'll turn around, plant his feet in a male role, and go full TV-and-film mode like it's nothing, and the range just floors me every time. I can only imagine the weight of carrying a centuries-old tradition alongside his brother, yet he wears it so lightly it reads as cool rather than burdened. Honoring old Edo craft while still working a modern audience? That, to me, is a real actor.
