Teruyuki Kagawa

Here's a guy who graduated from the University of Tokyo and then decided the best use of that brain was to bug out his eyes on camera and pretend to be a praying mantis, which I find genuinely delightful. Teruyuki Kagawa is one of those actors who quietly hijacks a scene the second he shows up in a supporting role, and the two Blue Ribbon awards tell me it's not just intensity, the man can actually act. What gets me is the range of it all: he throws himself fully into kabuki, lends his voice to animation, and turned up beaming on a kids' insect show like a total goofball, until a 2022 magazine report of sexual misconduct toward a hostess at a Ginza club in 2019 ended that show, his morning hosting job and his sponsorship deals. That mix of relentless, almost scary commitment to the craft and a slightly unhinged, lovable goofiness is exactly what makes him so watchable to me.
