My Take
Nao Asahi has my favourite kind of career: the one that got better after the obvious peak. She started as a member of the idol group Idoling!!!, where she was not the standout, and only really arrived once that chapter closed. On Japanese variety television she throws herself into the reaction, takes the joke, and hands it back sharper. For a former idol that is a real gamble. The safe move is to protect the cute image forever; she walked straight toward being laughed at instead, and added voice acting on top. Idol careers are supposed to be short.
