Naoki Miyanishi

Naoki Miyanishi, born in Hyōgo in 1985, came out of Kwansei Gakuin University and has spent his professional career pitching for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. He is a relief pitcher, and I'd argue relievers are the most thanklessly judged players in baseball. A starter accumulates wins and a narrative; a reliever inherits someone else's mess, is expected to clean it up as a matter of course, and is blamed the moment he doesn't. There's no cushion. Doing that job at the top level, for one organisation, over this many seasons, says something that no single statistic quite captures. Most players in his position eventually change teams to reset expectations or chase a contract, and he simply hasn't. Whatever the raw numbers look like in any given year, longevity in the bullpen is its own kind of achievement — it means a manager kept picking up the phone and calling the same name, season after season, in the innings where a mistake is unrecoverable. That's trust, earned the slow way.
