My Take

I genuinely believe Nathan Fielder is doing the most original work in comedy today. Nathan for You weaponised his business degree into deadpan absurdity, but The Rehearsal is something else entirely — a show that uses elaborate simulation to ask sincere questions about empathy, control, and whether human connection can be practised. Most comedians want you to laugh; Fielder wants you to laugh and then feel unsettled about why. That he shared a high-school improv stage with Seth Rogen yet evolved in the opposite direction fascinates me. He treats awkwardness as a research method, and I would call him a conceptual artist disguised as a comedian.

Overview

Nathan Joseph Fielder (born May 12, 1983) is a Canadian comedian, known for his awkward persona and for creating works that blur the line between reality and fiction. As a teenager, Fielder was involved in his school's improv group, which featured fellow comedian Seth Rogen. He majored in business at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, which influenced his later work.
