My Take

What I respect about Atkinson is the climb. Emerging from Launceston, Tasmania, far from football's traditional pipelines, he fought his way to Melbourne City and the Australian national team as a right-back. It is a thankless position: endless up-and-down running, defensive cover, the goals rarely yours. That kind of relentless, unglamorous work appeals to me more than highlight-reel flair. Born in 1999, he still has plenty of road ahead, and I suspect the island-bred hunger that got him here will keep pushing him. He's the sort of grafter I find easy to root for.
