Natsumi Abe

I'll always have a soft spot for Natsumi Abe, because she's the one whose voice basically defined the early Morning Musume sound for me. Decades on, the first thing people still reach for is "wow, she can actually sing," and honestly that's the whole flex right there, because trends come and go but a real voice just stays. What I love is how she didn't coast on idol nostalgia, she just quietly kept working, drifting into stage, film, and modeling without making a big noisy deal about any of it. And every single time I'm a little floored that this huge, clear, centered voice comes out of someone who's barely 152 centimeters from Muroran. She had a rough patch in 2004, when poems in her books were found to resemble other writers' lyrics and she stepped back for two months and withdrew from Kōhaku, but lasting this long on pure craft is its own kind of loud, and I respect it enormously.

Natsumi Abe is a Japanese singer, stage actress, film actress, and model born on August 10, 1981, in Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan. She stands 152 cm tall and has built a career spanning multiple entertainment disciplines over several decades. Known for her vocal ability, she has maintained a presence at the forefront of Japanese pop music while also working in stage productions, film, and modeling. In late 2004 she suspended her activities for two months after it emerged that poems in her photo books and essay collections resembled lyrics by others; the books were withdrawn and she pulled out of that year's Kōhaku Uta Gassen.
