Nick Thomas-Symonds

Nick Thomas-Symonds appeals to me precisely because he is more than a career politician. He is also an academic and barrister, and being made a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2012 tells you he thinks in historical depth. Raised in Blaenavon, the son of a steelworker, he rose through intellect to become MP for Torfaen in 2015 and then Paymaster General and Cabinet Office minister in 2024. I value politicians who pair scholarly rigour with working-class roots, and his trajectory suggests substance over spectacle, which is exactly the quality public life tends to lack.
