Nicko McBrain is, to me, the steady heartbeat behind one of metal's defining bands. Drumming for Iron Maiden since 1982 and appearing on every album from Piece of Mind onward, he gave the band its propulsive, muscular spine for four decades. What moves me is his refusal to fully let go: retiring from touring in 2024 yet staying on for studio work shows a craftsman who still loves the kit.
