Nicolas Berggruen

Nicolas Berggruen interests me far more for what he does with wealth than how he made it. A Paris-born, dual German-American billionaire investor, he once famously lived without a home, the so-called homeless billionaire, which hints at an unusual relationship with possession. But the Berggruen Institute is what earns my respect: a nonpartisan think tank wrestling with the future of governance and ideas. Anyone can compound capital; choosing to pour it into serious thought about how we should live is rarer. I read him as a man trying to leave behind questions worth more than his fortune.
