My Take
Grant Hart fascinates me precisely because he refused the usual rock template. A drummer who also sang lead in Husker Du, he carried melody from the back of the stage, then pushed himself forward with Intolerance and the guitar-driven Nova Mob. To me, he was the quieter, more melodic counterweight in one of America's great underground bands, and history has been slow to give him full credit. I admire artists who keep reinventing their role rather than coasting on a signature sound. His Minnesota roots gave the work a plainspoken honesty, and that craftsman's sincerity, I think, is exactly why his songs keep aging well.
Overview
Grant Vernon Hart (March 18, 1961 – September 13, 2017) was an American musician, best known as the drummer and co-lead vocalist in the punk rock band Hüsker Dü. After the band's breakup in 1988, he released his first solo album, Intolerance, before forming the alternative rock trio Nova Mob, where he moved to vocals and guitar. His solo career became his main focus after the dissolution of Nova Mob in 1995.
