My Take

What gets me about Pat Mastelotto is the sheer range hiding behind one drum kit. He held down the pop hits with Mr. Mister, then walked straight into the controlled chaos of King Crimson, which is about as steep a left turn as a drummer can make. The session credits seal it for me: that's his playing on the Rembrandts' "I'll Be There for You," the Friends theme practically everyone alive has heard. I love when a musician can be both an arena pop machine and a fearless experimentalist with Stick Men and O.R.k. He's the kind of player whose name I had to look up but whose grooves I already knew.
