My Take

For me, Paul Simon is the rare songwriter whose curiosity never calcified. Plenty of artists who defined the 1960s spent the rest of their careers re-singing their youth; Simon kept moving, from the folk intimacy of his years with Garfunkel to the globe-spanning rhythms of Graceland, always chasing a sound he had not made yet. The awards list is absurd, Grammys, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Gershwin Prize, but what I treasure is smaller: the precision of his lyrics, the way an ordinary sentence turns luminous in his hands. He wrote quietly, and the quiet still carries.
