Paula Wagner

Paula Wagner is one of those behind-the-scenes figures who quietly shaped modern Hollywood in a way most casual moviegoers never fully appreciated. She trained as an actress at Carnegie Mellon, but her real genius turned out to be on the producing side — she and Tom Cruise built one of the most commercially potent partnerships in the business through C/W Productions, shepherding blockbusters like Mission: Impossible and Vanilla Sky at a time when mid-budget star vehicles still ruled the multiplex. The Crystal Award she received in 2016 felt like a long-overdue nod from an industry that doesn't always spotlight the architects behind the camera. There's something genuinely inspiring about a woman from Youngstown, Ohio who willed her way to the top of the studio system through sheer taste and tenacity.
