My Take
Greenaway is a filmmaker I admire precisely because he refuses to be likable. Trained as a painter, he treats the frame as a canvas, stacking symmetry, numbers, color and catalogues until narrative becomes almost secondary. Films like The Draughtsman's Contract and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover are gorgeous, cold and deliberately confrontational. He is not for everyone, and that is the point. In an era of focus-grouped storytelling, his stubborn, formalist obsession feels rare and oddly bracing. I think of him as a magnificent eccentric who keeps cinema strange, and I respect him deeply for it.
