Peter Mayhew

To me, Peter Mayhew is proof that great acting needs neither a visible face nor a single line. Standing 218 cm and discovered while working as a hospital orderly, he was cast for his height but stayed for his soul. He poured warmth, loyalty, and a clumsy tenderness into Chewbacca across nearly forty years, from 1977 to 2015. What moves me is how completely he disguised himself yet remained unmistakably present in every gesture. He carried one of cinema's most beloved companions almost entirely through body language. When he passed in 2019, the screen lost a gentle giant whose silence spoke louder than most dialogue.
