My Take

Peter O'Toole is, for my money, the most magnetic screen presence British cinema ever produced. The towering frame, the trained stage voice, the eyes that seemed lit from inside — he could make stillness feel dangerous. What I admire most is his stubbornness: nominated again and again for the top acting prizes, he kept treating the work itself as the reward, and when the Academy finally handed him an honorary award in 2003, he accepted it like a man still planning to win outright. That mix of classical discipline and rogue charm is vanishingly rare now, and I doubt we will see his like again.

Overview

Peter James O'Toole (; 2 August 1932 – 14 December 2013) was an English and Irish actor. Known for his work on stage and screen, he received various accolades, including an Academy Honorary Award, a BAFTA Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and four Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for a Grammy Award and a Laurence Olivier Award.
