My Take
Peter Schilling appeals to the part of me that loves pop with imagination. A synthpop artist out of Stuttgart, he wove science fiction into his songs: astronauts, aliens, catastrophes, themes most chart-chasers would never touch. His 1983 hit Major Tom (Coming Home) climbed charts worldwide and won him the Goldene Stimmgabel that same year. What I admire is how he married cold synthesizer textures to real emotional ache, making the futuristic feel human. Breaking out of the German-language market to score an international hit was no small feat. He left behind a song that still resonates, and that, to me, is the mark of a true craftsman.
