Phil Anselmo

Phil Anselmo is one of those rare vocalists where you hear five seconds of his voice and you just know — raw, ragged, and absolutely ferocious. Growing up in New Orleans, a city soaked in jazz and blues, and then channeling all that Southern soul into the crushing groove of Pantera is genuinely one of rock history's most interesting contradictions. The Pantera years — "Vulgar Display of Power," "Far Beyond Driven" — produced some of the most physically aggressive music ever put to tape, and Anselmo was the face screaming right at you through all of it. Down showed a different side: slower, swampier, almost devotional. And the fact that he's run Housecore Records, championing underground and extreme music on his own terms, tells you this isn't a guy who coasts on nostalgia. He's complicated, he's controversial, but his impact on heavy music in the '90s and beyond is undeniable.
