Philip Oakey

Philip Oakey is one of those artists who shaped the look of a decade as much as its sound. As frontman and co-founder of the Human League, the Leicestershire native turned cold synthesizers into something unexpectedly sensual, and Don't You Want Me remains a near-perfect piece of pop architecture. What I appreciate is that his striking, asymmetric image was never a distraction from the music but part of the same forward-looking vision. He made the future feel stylish before most of his peers caught up. That he kept going solo and in collaboration speaks to a real aesthetic conviction rather than a passing trend.
