Waller-Bridge is, for my money, the most distinctive comic voice of her television generation. Fleabag's direct-address trick could have been a gimmick; in her hands it became a confession booth, implicating the audience in every lie the character tells herself. What I admire most is the structural discipline underneath the chaos — the jokes are load-bearing, each one quietly setting up a devastation two episodes later. Her 2019 awards sweep was deserved, but the rarer achievement is restraint: she ended Fleabag while it was perfect, when networks would have paid for fifty more episodes.
