My Take
Poorna Jagannathan's career proves my favorite thesis: some actors do not bloom late, they arrive fully fermented. Born in Tunis, raised across continents, educated in Maryland, she absorbed a worldliness that radiates through her work. Her grieving mother in The Night Of remains one of the most quietly devastating performances I have seen on television, and Never Have I Ever let her play strictness and tenderness in the same breath. She also produces, which tells me she would rather build opportunities than wait for them. Hollywood took too long to notice her; once it did, she made every role count. That is the mark of a real craftsman.
