Kaouther Ben Hania

Kaouther Ben Hania is, to me, one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. Emerging from Tunisia, a country rarely centered in global cinema, she has twice taken her work to the Academy Awards' International Feature shortlist with The Man Who Sold His Skin and The Voice of Hind Rajab. That persistence and reach from a small national industry earns my deep respect. I read her as a director who marries sharp social critique with genuine compassion for her subjects. I'm genuinely hoping to see her hold an Oscar; few artists feel as deserving of that moment.
