My Take
Raphael Saadiq is, to my ears, a true custodian of soul. Rising with Tony! Toni! Toné! out of Oakland and later thriving solo, he won a 2003 Grammy for Best R&B Song and kept the genre's warmth alive without ever sounding like a museum piece. What I respect is his range, vintage feeling but never dated, plus a deft hand producing others and scoring screen work. He lets the music do the talking rather than chasing the spotlight. That blend of California ease and deep groove is something I could listen to forever, and I think he's underrated as a craftsman.
