My Take

Jay Beckenstein makes the kind of music I reach for on a long drive, and that ease is precisely his achievement. As co-founder of Spyro Gyra, the Brooklyn-born saxophonist took fusion, a genre that can curdle into showy musicianship, and polished it into something genuinely welcoming without dumbing it down. You can hear his Buffalo-trained theory wrestling happily with street-level groove. What earns my deepest respect is the endurance: keeping a band alive for nearly half a century, and building his own studio to chase the right sound. He looks to me like a craftsman who found real contentment in the work.
