Ri Sol-ju

Ri Sol-ju is one of the most paradoxical public figures alive: globally recognizable yet almost entirely unknown. A former singer educated at Kim Il-sung University, she became North Korea's first lady and now drifts in and out of view alongside her husband. What interests me is the gap between visibility and knowledge. We have seen her face countless times, yet her inner life, her actual voice, remains a sealed room. Whether her long silences are chosen or imposed is impossible to say from the outside. I find myself wishing, just once, to glimpse the ordinary human behind the carefully managed image.
