My Take
For me, Richard Belzer was John Munch, full stop. He played that sardonic detective for an astonishing 23 years across Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order: SVU and a string of guest spots, which has to be one of the great single-character runs in television. What I find interesting is that he came up as a stand-up comedian first, and you could feel that dry, conspiracy-minded wit bleed into the role. The Connecticut native passed in 2023, but Munch outlived nearly every show he appeared on. To me that's the mark of a character actor who made one part unforgettable.
