My Take

Richard Perry commands my respect for that rarest gift, a great ear. Brooklyn-born and Michigan-educated, he rose through the late sixties into one of the era's defining producers, with over a dozen Gold records and four Platinum by 1982. He worked the unglamorous side of the glass, shaping sound and sending artists out polished, and much of the richness of American pop from that period owes itself to people like him. Learning he passed on Christmas Eve 2024 left me a little melancholy. But the records endure, and to me that lasting sound is the truest medal a producer can earn.
