My Take
Rob Thomas strikes me as one of television's most quietly inventive minds. Creating Veronica Mars alone would secure his place, but his range, from the cult-beloved Party Down to the genre-bending iZombie, reveals a writer drawn to characters living just off the mainstream. His University of Texas at Austin schooling shows in dialogue that crackles with wit and unexpected turns. I admire creators who cultivate fiercely loyal audiences rather than chasing the broadest possible reach, and Thomas does exactly that. Author, director, producer, even teacher, he is a true craftsman of story, and his work rewards viewers who pay close attention.
