Robert Lighthizer

Setting politics aside, Robert Lighthizer fascinates me as a type: the dealmaker who thrives away from the cameras. Born in small-town Ashtabula, Ohio, trained at Georgetown Law, he spent decades sharpening his craft in Washington before serving as U.S. Trade Representative. I have a soft spot for operators who win in the negotiating room rather than on the podium. His reputation for refusing to give ground in trade talks reads, to me, like the stubbornness of someone who climbed from a modest place and never forgot it. A practitioner first, performer never, and I respect that focus.
