My Take

Robert Schwartzman has had one of the more interesting under-the-radar careers in entertainment. A lot of people first met him as the dreamy band kid Michael in The Princess Diaries, but for me Rooney's self-titled debut is the real artifact, sunny power-pop that captured early-2000s Los Angeles perfectly. What impresses me now is that he didn't coast on the famous Coppola-Schwartzman name; he reinvented himself behind the camera and built Utopia into a genuinely thoughtful indie distributor. That combination of musician, actor, and savvy film executive is rare, and he seems to follow his curiosity rather than the spotlight.

Robert Schwartzman (born 1982) is an American actor, musician, and filmmaker born in Los Angeles, California, into the Coppola filmmaking family. He gained early fame as Michael Moscovitz in the Disney film The Princess Diaries and as the frontman of the rock band Rooney. He has since worked as a film director and founded the independent film distribution company Utopia. He is the brother of actor Jason Schwartzman.
