My Take
Roland Emmerich fascinates me because he marries German film-school rigor with the most unapologetically populist spectacle imaginable. The industry calls him the master of disaster, but I think that undersells him; few directors can stage the end of the world as pure, communal entertainment without losing the human thread. State honors like the Order of Merit sit oddly beside blockbuster mayhem, and I love that contrast. He is a craftsman who chose the multiplex over the art house, and stuck with it. For me he remains one of the few filmmakers whose work genuinely demands the biggest screen you can find.
