My Take

Roy Kim is one of those rare finds where the voice hits you before you even know his backstory — warm, unhurried, genuinely soulful in a way that stands apart from the polished K-pop machine. He shot to fame winning Superstar K 4 in 2012, which is impressive on its own, but what really gets me is that he then went off to study at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. rather than just riding the wave. That's a guy who actually wants to understand the world he's writing songs about. And write he does — as a singer-songwriter, his folk-tinged acoustic work has a lived-in intimacy that feels personal rather than manufactured. Still only in his early thirties as of 2024, I think the most interesting chapter of his career is still ahead of him.
