My Take

Ryuichi Kawamura has lived two musical lives, and the gap between them is what interests me most. From 1989 he fronted Luna Sea, one of the bands that defined Japanese visual kei: painted faces, enormous sound, a scene built on excess. Then from 1997 he stepped out solo and sang lush, unashamedly sentimental pop ballads to a mainstream audience that had never gone near a rock record. Usually one persona exposes the other as costume. His did not. Both read as sincere, which takes a rare kind of range. Luna Sea ended in 2000 and later returned, and he is still working across singing, composing, producing and acting. Born in Machida in 1970, he has stayed present for over thirty years by refusing to pick a lane.
