My Take
What draws me to S. Shankar is his refusal to choose between spectacle and substance. From Kumbakonam to the heights of Tamil cinema, he built a signature out of wrapping urgent social and vigilante themes in some of the most ambitious visual effects Indian film has produced. I admire directors who trust audiences to enjoy a message rather than endure it, and Shankar's work consistently does exactly that. The Filmfare honors and his 2010 Indian of the Year recognition feel less like trophies than confirmation of a rare balance: technical daring serving a genuine point of view. He is, to me, one of the great popular auteurs.
