My Take

Sam J. Jones is, for me, gloriously inseparable from one role: the blond hero of 1980's Flash Gordon. A former football player turned actor and model, he was the perfect beefcake casting for that era's gleefully campy science fiction. His follow-up series faded fast, but I find that almost endearing. To be remembered for decades on the strength of a single cult classic is its own kind of immortality, and few actors get even that. He later moved into producing, which hints at more grit than his pretty-boy image suggested. I have a weakness for performers defined by one unforgettable burst of glory.
