Satoshi Kuroda

Satoshi Kuroda stands 189 cm, which is tall for anyone and unusually tall for an infielder. Born in Hyogo Prefecture in January 1975, he played professionally in Japan and later moved into coaching with the Saitama Seibu Lions. He was Seibu's fourth-round pick in the 1992 draft and played for the Lions and then the Yomiuri Giants until 2006. Japanese baseball produces a lot of players like this: solid, useful, never the headline, and then one day they are the person shaping the next generation in the batting cage at six in the morning. That second career often lasts far longer than the first. He was also once married to the actress Chiharu Niiyama, a detail that tends to follow him in Japanese media coverage, though it says little about the work itself. I would rather judge him by how many Lions infielders come out of his hands looking sharp.
