My Take

What I admire about Scott Derrickson is that he treats horror as a serious craft rather than a cheap thrill. From The Exorcism of Emily Rose to Sinister and The Black Phone, his films probe genuine dread about evil, faith, and the things lurking just out of frame. His USC training shows in the precision, yet he never sacrifices visceral fear for cleverness. Doctor Strange proved he could command a blockbuster, but I think he is most himself in the shadows, building suspense brick by brick. At nearly sixty, he still scares smarter than most, and I keep hoping he stays in the dark.
